I saw an iguana today: at 4.15 pm in the afternoon of Friday 27th April, in Samutprakarn province. It was approximately one metre long. It’s the biggest reptile I’ve seen yet in Thailand. I only saw it for about five seconds, then it scuttled beneath a wooden platform.

This is the title of a great novel by Cormac McCarthy.  I read Suttree during 1996, when I was living in north London. It is set in Knoxville, Tennessee, and follows the life of Cornelius Suttree, who is a fisherman on the Tennessee River. During that year, I was unemployed, skint and lived near to a river so the story resonated with my own situation.
